| YardMan 31AS2B5-801 Single-Stage Snow Thrower with Electric Start |
| |
 |
|
| |
Product Description |
| Say goodbye to frustrating, sweat-inducing pull starts--this compact, highly-maneuverable, single-stage blower is a cinch to get going. A simple push of a button activates the reliable electric starter. Equipped with a robust 5 horsepower engine, this snow thrower clears sidewalks, driveways, patios and porches in a fraction of the time required to shovel by hand. A four-cycle engine means no messy mixing of oil and gas. The manual drive system lets you regulate how fast the engine runs, while a self-pulling, rubber-edged auger lends positive traction to help propel the machine forward and leave a clean path behind. Clear snow as high as 11 inches, to a width of 21 inches. This YardMan snow thrower also comes loaded with thoughtful features. An auger/clutch control system keeps the engine running after the bail is released, eliminating the need to restart. A large handle makes it easy to pull the engine cord--even when wearing big, bulky mittens. The replaceable scraper blade is reversible to double its life. A folding handle minimizes vibration, plus saves garage space once warm weather comes. Best of all, the unit arrives fully-assembled with the oil needed for operation--so you can start clearing snow the minute it's unpacked. This outdoor tool weighs 80 pounds and is covered by a two-year, limited warranty. --Mary Park |

Plowed great cut right threw our recent heavy snow fall
|
| Review Date: December 4, 2006 |
| Reviewer: Jerome Capozzoli, Oak Park, IL USA |
I just go this machine the other day and I am happy with it the fact that I don't have to mix the oil with the cad is great! 5.5 hsp my only problem with it was that on small amounts of wet snow it keept clogging because it needs more of it to throw it so I found myself cleaning it more than usual but when I had to tackle the thick slushy stuff it worked fantastic I even did 10 other homes with it that day it really can move the stuff! I like it's size also I was going to purchase a larger blower but opted for this one to save on storage space. I would recommend it for early snow removal and not stuff that has iced over you would need a bigger blower with cutting blades on it to tackle that.

I have used my new yardman 3 times and I am on my 2nd v-belt. I have an old toro before they came out with the shute and it still has the orginal belt on it. I like the idea of not mixing the oil with the gas. The engine starts easily and it hasn't stalled on me yet which is great. I might try a 34 and a half inch belt next time and see if it last better. The snow was on the heavy side but I can't control mother nature. I have a long driveway. I tried the electric start once and it works but it starts on the first or second pull so I don't have to use it. If it wasn't for the v-belts I would rate it higher.

I was warned in advance about this this company (MTD/Yard-Man), but could not resist the price at the time. I now know why this company receives such low quality ratings: their products are of very low quality.
Expect it to work for one or two years. Then expect to pay $100 a year to fix the parts that break on it. They cannot take long term use.
We average, maybe, ten light to moderate snowfalls a year. Motor failed during the second year (just within the warranty period). Third year: the augur broke!! Yup, 4 inches of snow was more than it could take. That would have been a $150 repair. However, I know when not to throw good money after bad. I will be purchasing a Toro, Craftsman, Honda or Ariens - they are all rated superior to this company. By the third year, you will save $100 per year. |
doesn't throw well & too many problems
|
| Review Date: January 3, 2009 |
| Reviewer: Chloe, Minneapolis, MN USA |
| The specs on this machine sounded great for me -very lightweight but could handle up to 10" of snow, a decent motor size and clearing width for a single stage. However, it has been nothing but trouble. First, the belt broke after the first 5" of clearing heavy snow. That was replaced, but then there were problems starting it. The second winter (this one), we have had a lot of snow. It gets through 6" fine, but it can't throw snow even 10' from one side of the drive to the other, so I end up doing it twice, or three times - very weak in that regard! In addition, it took a lot of time to get it to work this season, and it doesn't leave a clean driveway, even if you do it twice, so I end up shoveling for the last round...and then it snows again. Altogether, it has been a major disappointment. Better than a shovel, but most of the time, my neighbor blows it with his two-stage. |

| Yard Machines 21-Inch 3.5 HP Single-Stage Snow Thrower #31A240-800 |
| |
 |
|
| |
Product Description |
| Ideal for clearing paths, walkways, and drives of light snow up to 6 inches deep, this Yard Machines single-stage snow thrower features 190-degree chute rotation for tossing snow far out of the way. A 3-1/2-horsepower, 2-cycle engine offers plenty of power to send the snow flying. And, a 30-foot throw-distance keeps the snow from piling up too close to the walkway for effective clearing. The motor's cast-iron cylinder sleeve means long life and reliable starts, even when it's really cold. The snow thrower is designed to clear a 21-inch swath in one pass, and is equipped with a 10-inch intake height to make quick work of snowfall on driveways, sidewalks, steps and patios. A self-pulling auger-assist helps propel the snow thrower and provides positive traction. Yard Machines designed this thrower with a smart, reversible/replaceable scraper blade for cheaper maintenance. Also, the unit's auger/clutch control system helps keep the engine running when the bail is released for easier starts. The thrower's 7- by 1-1/2-inch wheels cover rough terrain for easy transport back to the shed or garage. Plus, folding handles and a lightweight, 63-pound design ensure easy storage and transport. Best of all, the unit comes fully assembled and with oil so you're up and running out of the box. Yard Machines covers this unit with a 2-year limited warranty. --Brian D. Olson |

Very Good Product
|
| Review Date: December 27, 2000 |

| I just received my unit yesterday. It was very easy to setup (only required the handle be tightened and the snow shoot adjusted). The unit is very well built and the engine is the same used in many brands. The machine looks like it will be easy to maintain (the cutter blade on the base is easy to adjust, although it does not need it out of the box; the engine takes a 50:1 oil with the gas, which comes with the machine and is bought at ACE or any hardware store; the shoot is easy to adjust for throwing snow short or long distances). The first start was easy, put on choke, push primer button, turn key, pull starter rope. After reading the first review of this machine, I felt that a different opinion should be heard. This machine easily competes with a Toro or Craftsman. |

Have not even changed the spark plug, never oiled it, no maint. given what so ever. Have done my friends on both sides and 3 across the street for last 3 years ( they have long driveways,I don't ) had a friend use it for 9 office buildings he was plowing the lots with his truck, you have to do the walkways and some go around the buildings. He said it went through everything including drifts easy, I'v gone through drifts too. It is a very good tool to have in an Indiana winter! |
Good small thrower

| Reviewer: L. Milano, New Jersey, USA |
I gave this machine 4 stars in terms of value: there are much better machines at twice or three times the cost of this one. Whether or not it is worthwhile to spend more money on a better machine is very relative and is up to you. My recommendation is: buy this machine if you live in an area with occasional snow. If you regularly get heavy snow, buy a bigger machine. By the way, this is what the manufacturer recommends.
I bought one a few days ago and used it to clear the first two snows of the season. I am happy with the purchase. I cleared all my snow in 15 minutes with very little effort. Compare this with over an hour of suffering with the shovel. But I would do better and faster with a better (more expensive, and certainly two-stage) machine. Here are some tips:
(1) Always try to clear the snow right after it stopped snowing. It is much easier. In particular, this machine does not handle well thawing snow, or snow mixed with ice.
(2) I had to adjust the "Control Cable" (see the manual) to the top hole, the one that makes the cable more tense and improves the traction of the auger.
(3) Do not go straight into heavy snow. It will clog with snow and the engine will stop. Instead, I use this technique: if the snow is fresh and light, I just go ahead and clear it. If it is a bit heavy but not too deep, I advance one step, let it throw the snow, and I back up one step to let it get back to full power. Then I advanve another step and so on. Finally, if the snow is pretty deep, I go in steps. First I "shave" the surface, and in a second pass I go deeper.
Despite all these precautions, every once in a while I need to stop the machine and clear the snow from the auger. It takes a few seconds, no big deal.
One big plus of this machine is that it is light and compact. It fits in a corner in my garage right close to the door, so I can get it out very easily. A bigger machine would have to stay in another place.
In summary, it is pretty good for what it costs. It works as advertised, it is simple to assemble, light and just ok clearing snow. Works for me. |
This thing is saving my back and shoulders!

| I received this machine last week and it was very easy to put together and get started. In searching for a snowthrower, I wanted one that was not too big and heavy, for a woman to operate. This was just what I needed. So far, I've thrown about 7-8 inches of snow in two sessions and it works great. |

| This is my second MTD. I bought my first one about 5 years ago used. It was a 97 model. I decided to get this one for the great price of $199.99 plus the 10% off as the 97 model will probably kick the bucket at some point. I was impressed with the changes from the 97 model. The chute is easier to adjust and this model has 3.5 hp versus the 3.0 hp of the 97. It looks nicer and had knobby wheels instead of the line wheels, which helps with your manuvering. I had no problem plowing through 7 inches of snow and it shot the snow to the side of my neighbors house, oops! I fired it up with a little effort as I had the choke set in the wrong place. The 97 is the opposite way than the newer models. The 4.5 HP just dropped another $50.00 in price, so I am kicking myself. One other con is the snow tends to kick back underneath the machine. Not sure if this is just do to a unlevel surface. 2-24-07 (Found the plate underneath can be adjusted, so this took care of the snow kicking problem). Anyway, I will try it again during our next snow storm. for the price this is a nice little machine that is easy to push around, especially in tight areas. Beats using a shovel! Snow storm of St. Patricks Day 3-17-07. Worked like a charm through about 12" on snow.. Great lille machine :) 12-07 Year 2 !!! Still running strong. Cleaned up the December 13th storm without a problem. |

| The hardest part of this machine is mixing the oil and the gas. After that it's really simple to operate. Put the key in, throw the choke on, prime it a couple times, and rip the cord and bam, your throwing snow with the best of them. I threw 8 inches of snow the other day and it worked like a charm. I say go ahead and by it. |

I live in Chicago and I had no problem with throwing 8 inches of snow off of my sidewalk. I wish I could've done my driveway but it was ice not snow. Bottom line is I am happy with the performance of this snowthrower. |

Today December 30th I attempted to throw 3 inches of snow that arrived in the Detroit area and it failed miserablely. I took it back to the Meijer Store where I obtain a refund and I am shopping for another brand. |

| If you have three inches of powder this one will do the job, anything more you're just wasting your money. Used mine a half dozen times and had to replace the belt. Doesn't throw snow like my Craftsman that is the same size and nine years (which still has the original belt). Doesn't start that easy either. |
Way over-priced.

Simple to use, but very powerful.

| This is my 3rd snow blower. It is very well designed and easy to operate. It starts easily with or without the electric start once you find the right settings of the choke and primer. Two days after I purchased it we had 3.5 inches of snow here in Oshkosh Wisconsin. I was supprised to find that the rotating blade pulls the snowblower foreward at a slow speed in heavier snow and very fast in light snow. It is light enough to run up a light ramp into my van for use in other places. With a two year warranty I purchased it on sale for $400.00. Even in heavier snow it throws it 20 to 30 feet with no bogging down. I am very pleased. |

| Lets get real here. Men(and boys) like to throw things, shoot things, and launch projectiles of any kind, including snow. Well, I have been shoveling for gazzillions of years, and finally decided to get a "Snowthrower". I purchased this unit at Fleet Farm and fired her up today. Honestly, I didn't have too much snow to throw accept for the leftovers from shoveling the other day, but this sucker was fun. It was powerful and didn't slow down at all, even as I hacked through the stuff at the bottom of the driveway leftover from the street snow plow. You have to admit, you start to feel like a kid again when your shootin' snow. I almost felt like just making tracks in the yard just to watch this baby pump powder. Whew! It is a nice machine for only $389 at Fleet farm. Again, I've only had it 1 day, but I'm impressed so far. Well, back to pacing and waiting for the next snowfall. |

The snow blower arrived a few days earlier than expected at our son's family residence.....and thank goodness for that! Here in Pittsburgh we have been hip deep in snow for what seems to be since the eighth grade picnic. My son can't say enough good things about the machine. It started up immediately and hasn't stopped since, it just gobbles up the snow. He couldn't have expected better! |

| Hearing that we were getting our 2nd major snowstorm of the year expected at 30+ inches, I knew the shovel wouldn't cut it, so the day before the storm I ordered based upon availability and reviews and boy am I glad I did! This little machine kicks snow hiney! Even though my husband waited until the snow was done and we had a full driveway with 27 inches of snow, this machine powered through it and did the same when we loaned it to our neighbor! I will advise that being that the machine has a low threshold, you may want to go out periodically in a big storm every 8 inches or so so that you don't have to supplement with a shovel. Even if you don't, this machine will save you HOURS out of your day! A++++ |

| Lets cut to the chase. This snow thrower has ballz. I used it for the first time today, i live in Wisconsin where we get plenty of snow, and the it ran like a champ. Despite its size it can throw snow as well as a larger snow blower. However the snow chute can and WILL plug up when throwing very WET slushy snow. As the augers suck in snow it will help pull the machine so the operator does'nt need to push very hard at all. Simple and easy to use i like it much better than the much larger self-propelled snow blowers. It's a tad over priced here, i got mine for $399 at another store. It comes fully assembled just add 5w-30 and gas and in not time you'll be done. |
Meets all expectations

| Reviewer: T. Dvorak, |
I recently purchased this snowthrower at a competing store for under $400. Living in Wisconsin, I am familiar with numerous snowfalls throughout the winter, including heavy snow, light snow, and getting through the chunks the plows send into the driveway. I have been very pleased with the snow blower so far. It has not clogged on me yet, and does a great job throwing the snow over the piles along the driveway. The chute rotates easily, and as other reviewers mentioned, it does pull itself nicely in lighter snow. Two things I would maybe improve would be to get "beefier" wheels that have better grip, and an easier to read oil dipstick. Otherwise, once you familiarize youself with the settings, it starts easily and gets the job done!

| I purchased this product from Home Depot. It could hardly throw 5" of throw 7 feet. Then after a few minutes, refused to stay running for longer than 3 minutes. I only owned this thing for 3 weeks an used it twice (it died on the second occasion). Took it back to Home Depot and exchanged it for a Toro. I got it to save a few bucks...but one thing about a snow thrower...there is no point to having it if it is unreliable. Go Toro. |

Great Rig
|
| Review Date: January 22, 2005 |
| Reviewer: John F. Cassidy, Hanover, NH United States |
I have two of these for my two homes. I really love track drive snowthrowers, especially cause one of my homes has a very steep driveway, and these rigs will always go up the hill.
I recently bought a Honda top of the line track drive model and hated it because it did not have skid-steer capabilities, like these YardMan models do. The only down-side to these YardMan units is the Tecumseh engines are fairly loud and you may wish to use ear protection with them.
The grip heaters are very useful when the temperatures are very cold. |
MTD makes Sears as well as Yard Man snow throwers
|
| Review Date: February 3, 2005 |
| Reviewer: E. Burke, New York,NY |
| I own an MTD manufactured Sears track drive snow thrower almost exactly like the Yard Man model shown here. My MTD made Sears machine is now 6 1/2 years old. I do my own service and buy MTD parts because they are the same and cheaper once you make the model number switch. You should Keep a spare friction wheel rubber and drive belt and auger belts ( U need 2 auger belts for one change ) along with a few extra shear bolts in your personal inventory. Changing all these items is really easy but you need to try this in warm weather not during a blizzard when you discover they need changing. All these items last 3-4 years of normal use. Use 100% synthetic oil in the engine it does not thicken when cold like ordinary oil. Also never fill the gas tank unless with gasoline that has fuel stabilizer added to it. I installed a Briggs & Stratton in line fuel shut-off valve, purchased for about 5 bucks, and I run the fuel out each time I shut off the machine. Mine is easy to start as a result, even without the electric start. CR has consistently rated these machines at the top of their charts for many years. They are an excellent buy, and can be maintained by any person who is handy with a set of ordinary tools. Read the owners manual, learn the adjustments ( they are moronically easy to do) and this simple machine will save you from the back breaking work of shoveling snow, and never let you down. MTD has refined the machine over the years and it works well, as CR learned when they compared ( the wheeled version) to other machines. |
Good, but not the best track snow thrower
|
| Review Date: February 5, 2005 |
| Reviewer: David N, New York, NY USA |
I bought my yardman thru Amazon 2 years ago and it still runs just as well with or without the electric start. It still look brand new also. I live in the northeast so I do get enough use out of it. I even do my neighbors driveway with it. The reason I got the tracks instead of wheels is because I live on a hill and I wanted to make sure I could go up and down with ease, although I probably could have saved some money by getting chains put on a wheeled model. As another reviewer said, the steering is a bonus, especially for the snow thrower with tracks. My brother-in-law owns the Honda with tracks and it cost him about $1000.00 more with no steering. Also this come with a halogen light built in, with the Honda, you have to purchase a light kit, another $150.00 but the yardman does not throw the snow nearly as far as the Honda. The specs say it will throw snow up to 40 feet. I have tried it in all conditions, blizzard, wet, light snow and the most I have ever gotten was about 25 ft. I've seen the Honda throw it better than 50ft. If you need to do a huge area, distance is an important feature. Also, newer models have the joystick chute rotation which I think is a must have. I wish they sold a conversion kit for this model. I would save a lot of time. Overall, this is a very good snowthrower and it has not given me any problems in 2+ yrs of duty, but I would definitely recommend going with a chute rotation

It hasn't snowed yet, so I can't comment on its use, but I've tried to get it ready.
Assembly disclosed a few problems: the cotter pin that holds the discharge chute control rod together was missing, the instructions didn't match the product in some areas, and the drive clutch control was mis-adjusted so the drive was always engaged, causing the snow thrower to try to run away from me as soon as it was started.
MTD provided the missing cotter pin. I figured out the assembly instructions and adjusted the clutch. DO NOT START THE ENGINE UNTIL AFTER YOU HAVE TESTED THE DRIVE CONTROL CLUTCH!
I also noticed that the paint was peeling off the shift arm assembly. MTD sent me a replacment (in black rather than Yard-Man green), and I installed it myself in an hour or so.
Simple testing of the snow thrower disclosed two important omissions: a muffler guard and an hour meter.
The muffler which becomes very hot with use. I know this because I ruined a snow thrower cover by melting it onto the muffler. To keep this from happening again, I ordered and installed the Tecumseh 36294 muffler guard, which cost me about $45 through a local Tecumseh service dealer. The muffler guard is shown in the photos of this engine on Tecumseh's web site, and the engine even has the mounting holes for the guard, so I don't understand why, on this expensive snow thrower, they didn't include the guard, which surely would have cost MTD much less than I paid.
The guard is not ideal: its spaces are too wide to keep things from hitting the muffler, but I have closed up those spaces with some stainless steel wire. Now (I hope) I won't ruin another cover.
Finally, to be sure the snow thrower gets its scheduled service, I added a SenDEC 806-100-0222 tachometer/hour meter. It's another $40 item that would ideally have been provided with the snow thrower.
So we have: missing/defective parts, and obvious omissions for false economy. It makes me wonder if there have been other omissions. On the other hand, customer service has been good, if not prompt, and the snow thrower does seem to be ruggedly built, and starts easily (at least in 40-degree (F) weather) so I hope it turns out to be effective and reliable. Stay tuned. |
Excellent when working

| I would give this machine a 5 star rating with one exception, and that is the electronic chute control. During the first use of my second snow season, the electronic chute quit turning. With a friend (former sears tech.) we took the motor apart and found excessive carbon buildup. I am now having to remove the motor and clean the brushes each time I need to use the machine. Replacement motor will run ~ $180 plus shipping currently. Wish there was a manual chute kit available. Other than that, it starts first pull every time. Great for tight spaces - able to do outdoor wheelchair ramps with 180* turn in the middle because of the steering. Great handwarmers help on long projects as well. Overall, would recommend to everyone. |

I have one of these and I love it. It has the grip to shove it's way thru a drift. In the transport setting you can do stone drives without picking up and throwing the stones. Also the machine self balances itself which really helps keep you up when you lose your footing. Very easy to start even without using the 120V electric start.
The only down side to this whole machine is rarely it throws a track off at the worst time. It takes a 1/2" wrench to put it back on, but your doing it oout in the snow at the time. The power steering is really a great thing as well. I am a tall person so the 6 speed forward keeps it up with my pace. Tracks are definitly the way to go if you can afford it. If I had to buy one again I would. |

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a "borderless world", cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a ci (more...)

The r (more...)

This econometric study covers the latent demand outlook for consumer non-riding single-stage snow throwers and snow blowers excluding attachment type across the states and cities of the United States. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 9,800 cities in the United States. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it's state and of the United States is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-a-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each state and city, latent demand estimates are created for consumer non-riding single-stage snow throwers and snow blowers excluding attachment type. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details a (more...)

Also, the unit's auger/clutch control system helps keep the engine running when (more...)

This study covers the latent demand outlook for consumer non-riding single-stage snow throwers and snow blowers excluding attachment type across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as “regions”). Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of “economic population”, as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities (more...)
